Behind the headline of a Supreme Court order lies a quiet tragedy in Yelahanka. Over 200 families – mothers watching their children play, elderly couples sitting on verandas, young professionals returning home after long days – have been breathing poison. Two chimneys from a diesel power plant, built within spitting distance of Puttenahalli Lake, have been releasing thick black smoke into the air these families call home. The lake beside them is a Bird Conservation Reserve, home to creatures that cannot speak for themselves. The power plant's wall was built right against the lake bund, choking the water, filling its channels with concrete. No public hearing was held. No green belt was created. The people were never asked. And then, one day, the Supreme Court said: Enough. Environment first.
